National Night Out 2009
The City of Frisco's 2009 National Night Out took place on Tuesday, October 13. Despite weather worries, Frisco residents once again came out in force to support their neighborhoods' efforts to support National Night Out.
The National Association of Town Watch ranked Frisco 21st in the nation for cities with a population of 100,000-299,000 for our work and overall success in National Night Out 2009. This was our first year to compete in Category 2, those cities with the aforementioned population ranges, due to our recent growth to approximately 107,000 residents at the time of National Night Out. We are very proud of our ranking against such strong competitors in this category!
In all, over 120 neighborhoods registered their block parties with the police department. Unfortunately, some parties were cancelled or rescheduled due to concerns about continued rain throughout the evening, but a vast majority of the parties continued as planned.
Frisco police and fire personnel once again visited all of the neighborhoods throughout the night, sharing in the festivities. Children and parents alike were able to speak to officers and firefighters in person, as well as get an up-close look at all of the "tools of the trade." It goes without saying that numerous police cars' and fire engines' sirens were heard throughout the night as children took turns trying their hand at alerting everyone of their presence.
In addition to the neighborhood block parties that are the cornerstone of the National Night Out, numerous events led up to the October 13 festivities.
The Green Home, Health & Safety Fair was the first event leading up to the National Night Out and was held on Saturday, September 26, at the Frisco Athletic Center. The fair is designed to promote safety, education, and awareness within the community and was a great success once again this year. The safety fair was also the first opportunity for people to donate blood as part of the blood drive.
The Battle of the Badges blood drive ran from September 30-October 2 at numerous locations throughout the city, including the Frisco Athletic Center during the safety fair, Frisco City Hall, police headquarters, and the fire department's Central Fire Station.
The annual blood drive matched the city’s finest police and fire departments against one another to see who could donate the most, all going to a charitable cause. Participants who stopped and donated were able to designate whether they wanted their donation to be counted along with those made by the police or fire departments. The fire department won this year's donations with a final count of 83 votes to the police department's 80 votes.
Following the safety fair and blood drive was the Good vs. Good Basketball Game, which took place on Saturday, October 10, at Frisco High School. The basketball game pitted the best players from the police and fire departments against one another. Unfortunately, the police department couldn't make it three straight wins and lost to the fire department with a final score of 64-51. The police department still leads the series 2-1 and will look to get revenge next year.
